A Passion for Education Law
I am a professor at the University of Connecticut, where I hold the John and Maria Neag Chair for Urban Education and teach courses in education law.
I have been passionate about this topic from an early age because of my grandparents’ and parents’ experiences in segregated and later desegregated schools.
My research analyzes how law can help marginalized students attain equal educational opportunity. I also examine how policymakers can reform law to prevent it from being weaponized against these groups. I focus on school finance and school choice, with an emphasis on charter schools
Because of my concerns about the impact of law on education, I seek to improve the legal literacy of educators, parents, and advocates through professional development programs.
In these turbulent times, I find balance through mindfulness and spending time in nature. Hiking and traveling with my wife Idun are favorite pastimes. Highlights include climbing Mt. Washington and hiking across England (twice).
Find out more about my story, hobbies, and thoughts on education law in the accompanying video!
My brother and I talk about growing up in a historic Black community, our educational journeys, the future of education—and sports.
